Privacy Policy
This policy explains what happens to information when you use PDFJIFF.com ("PDFJIFF", "we", "us"). The page covers two different things:
- Your documents - These stay on your device. We never upload them to a third-party server.
- Ordinary website data - analytics, cookies and advertising - which works much like it does on other ad-supported sites, and which is described in detail below.
1. Your documents
Every tool on PDFJIFF runs in your browser. When you select a file, your browser loads it into memory on your own computer or phone and the processing code operates there. The file is not shared with us, is not sent to a third party, and is not uploaded to any server we control.
Therefore:
We hold no copies of your documents, and we cannot retrieve, view, restore or share them.
We do not read the contents of your files — text, images, form data, embedded attachments or metadata.
Nothing you work on is queued, cached or backed up by us. When you close or reload the tab, the working copy is discarded by the browser.
Some tools store small amounts of data locally on your device using your browser's storage — for example your chosen interface language. This information stays in your browser, is not transmitted to us, and can be cleared at any time by clearing your browser's site data for PDFJIFF.com.
Passwords you type into the "Protect PDF", "Remove PDF password" or "Unlock PDF" tools are used in memory to complete the operation and are never sent to us or stored anywhere by us.
2. Information we do collect
Usage analytics
We collect aggregated, anonymised statistics about how the site is used, so we know which tools people rely on and where they run into trouble. This typically includes the pages visited, the approximate region derived from an IP address, the referring site, device type, browser and operating system, screen size, language setting, and whether we could deliver the final output or if the operation ran into trouble.
These records describe usage of the site, not the contents of your documents. We use them to prioritise fixes and launch new tools, not to build a profile of you as an individual.
Server and security logs
Our hosting and content delivery provider automatically records standard technical information when your browser requests a page — IP address, timestamp, requested URL, user agent and response status. These logs exist to deliver the site, block abuse and diagnose outages, and are retained for a limited period before deletion.
Messages you send us
If you email us, we receive whatever you choose to include: your email address, your message, and any details you add about your browser or the problem. We use it to reply and to fix the issue, and we keep support correspondence only as long as it is useful for that purpose. Please do not attach confidential documents to a support email. We do not need them, and we would rather you did not send them.
3. Cookies and similar technologies
We and our advertising and analytics partners use cookies, local storage and similar technologies. Broadly they fall into four groups: strictly necessary, preferences, analytics, and advertising.
Full detail — what each category does, which providers are involved, and how to change your mind — is in our Cookie Policy.
4. Advertising
PDFJIFF is free and is funded by advertising. We use Google AdSense to serve ads on the site.
- Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this site or other sites.
- Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visit to PDFJIFF and/or other sites on the internet.
- You can opt out of personalised advertising by Google through Google Ads Settings (google.com/settings/ads).
- You can opt out of personalised advertising by many other vendors through aboutads.info/choices (Digital Advertising Alliance), youronlinechoices.eu (EU), or optout.networkadvertising.org (Network Advertising Initiative).
- Opting out does not remove ads. It means the ads you see are less likely to be based on your browsing history.
Advertising code runs in an isolated frame and has no access to the files you are working on, the settings inside a tool, or anything your browser has read from your device. It sees the page you are on, not what you are doing with your document.
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share your documents with advertisers or anyone else.
5. Consent, and how to change it
If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, Switzerland or the US, we ask for your consent before non-essential cookies are set, using our consent management platform that passes your choices on to our advertising and analytics partners. Strictly necessary cookies are set regardless, because the site cannot function without them.
You can change or withdraw your consent at any time from the cookie settings link in the site footer. Withdrawal does not affect processing that already took place while consent was in force.
Where we rely on legal bases under the GDPR, they are: consent for advertising, analytics and other non-essential cookies; legitimate interests for keeping the site secure, preventing abuse and maintaining basic service logs; and legitimate interests for handling and replying to support messages you send us.
6. Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access the personal data we hold about you, to correct it, to have it deleted, to restrict or object to how it is used, to receive a copy in a portable format, and to withdraw consent. Residents of California and other US states with comparable laws may have the right to know what is collected, to request deletion, to opt out of "sale" or "sharing" of personal information for cross-context behavioural advertising, and not to be discriminated against for exercising those rights.
A practical note: because the tools run locally and there is no account system, we hold no information that identifies you personally. For advertising and analytics data held by our partners, the fastest route is usually the cookie settings link in our footer and the vendor opt-outs listed in section 4. For anything else, write to us at the address in section 11 and we will respond within the period required by the applicable law.
We honour Global Privacy Control (GPC) signals sent by your browser where the law requires it.
7. Data retention
We keep aggregated analytics for as long as it remains useful for product decisions, in a form that does not identify individuals. Server and security logs are kept for a short period and then deleted or anonymised. Support emails are kept while the matter is open and for a reasonable period afterwards. Advertising and analytics partners apply their own retention periods, described in their own policies.
8. International transfers
Our hosting, analytics and advertising providers operate globally, so the limited data described above may be processed in countries other than the one you live in, including the United States. Where that involves transfers out of the EEA or the UK, our providers rely on recognised transfer mechanisms such as Standard Contractual Clauses.
9. Security
The site is served over HTTPS. The documents you process are never transmitted to us, so there is no store of user files to be breached, subpoenaed or misconfigured. For the limited data we do handle, we apply access controls and keep the number of systems involved deliberately small. No method of transmission or storage is perfectly secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
10. Third-party links and changes to this policy
Pages on this site may link to third parties. Their privacy practices are their own, and we encourage you to read their policies.
We may update this policy as the site changes or as the law changes. The last updated date at the top always reflects the current version, and material changes will be highlighted on the site.
11. Contact
Questions about this policy, or requests relating to your rights, can be sent to hello@pdfjiff.com.
This policy explains our practices in plain language. It is not legal advice, and if you have specific compliance obligations you should take your own.
